What Is TMJ Disorder?

Your temporomandibular joints, or TJMs, give your jaw a full range of motion. TMJ disorder refers to pain or discomfort relating to these joints. It can occur for a number of reasons, including arthritis, inflammation, or excessive strain on the muscles that govern jaw movement, usually resulting from an imbalanced bite. Symptoms of TMJ disorder can include:

  • Pain in your face, neck, head, shoulders, and back

  • A clicking noise when you open or close your mouth

  • Difficulty or pain when chewing

  • Limited range of motion in your jaw

  • Ringing in your ears

TMJ Disorder Diagnosis

Dr. Basawaraj can conduct a complete examination to diagnose your condition. First, the dentist will conduct a visual exam, looking for signs of dental erosion, misalignment, inflammation, or swelling. After these initial tests, your dentist will take panoramic x-rays and CT scans to examine your jaw and detect any damage to soft tissues.

Treatment for TMJ Disorder

Your treatment will depend on the severity and cause of your condition. Options include:

  • Lifestyle changes: If you have a mild case of TMJ disorder, you may be able to control your symptoms with a few simple behavioral changes. For example, chewing gum or resting your chin on your hand can put pressure on your jaw and aggravate your symptoms. You may also be advised to eat soft foods for a while to give your jaw a chance to heal.

  • Mouth guards: Mouth guards and occlusal splints are two of the most common treatments for TMJ disorder. These can prevent you from grinding your teeth and causing dental damage that results in a misaligned bite. They can also be designed to move your teeth into the proper position, relieving strain on the muscles and tendons that govern the movement of the jaw.

  • Medications: Prescription and over-the-counter pain medication can alleviate your discomfort and reduce tissue inflammation.

  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture can stimulate the production of endorphins and neurotransmitters, helping to relief your symptoms. We will be happy to refer you to an acupuncturist for treatment.

  • Collaboration with a physician or specialist: If you have a particularly complex case of TMJ disorder, we may refer you to a specialist.
